Formula E says the “pioneering” camera technology, which is mounted on the protective padding inside the lining of drivers helmets, will provide fans 🍬with a unique insight from behind the vis🌠or during race and "push the boundaries" of what is possible in sports broadcasting.
The FIA homologated device was used for the first time during live coverage of last weekend’s Santiago E-Prix in Chile, marking a world's firs𝓰t across any FIA sanctioned single-seater championship.
According to Formula E, the FIA and teams undertౠook “many months" of research to fine-tune the dev🍷ice, which is 8 millimetres in diameter and weighs just 2.5 grams.
After a successful introduction, Formu🔴la E has confirmed it will continue to use the ‘Driver’s Eye’ camera at the next round at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City on February 15.
Speaking about the camera technology, Formula E digital head Sebastian Tiff🦄ert said: "When you speak to Formula E drivers, the first thing they highlight is the thrill and challenge of driving on city circuits.
“Driver’s Eye provides a new perspectiv💛e from inside the helmet in live race conditions, showing the skill it takes to thread the car between the walls whꦅile processing data and communicating with the team at speed.
“Driver’s Eye adds a unique dimension 🔯to the viewing experience and the innovative camera technology immerses fans in wheel-to-wheel racing.
“We are delighted to bring our fans closer🎃 to the drivers’ sensory experience and their engagement with Driver’s Eye content across social media demonstrates the value of innovations core to the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.”
Venturi’s Felipe Massa, who was one of the drivers who trialed the camera in Sa♈ntiago, praised the innovation, adding: "I think it is cool how Driver’s Eye shows fans exactly what I am seeing during a race in real time.
“It gives the viewers i🗹nsi✃ght into the tight and challenging city-centre circuits that we race on in Formula E and it demonstrates what drivers need to manage and control over the course of a race.
"I like t𒊎echnology like this, that brings fans even closerꦕ to the action. Driver’s Eye is a great way to show the work that goes on behind the wheel."
